Oshkosh, July 22- A very hot, humid day greeted drivers and fans to the Oshkosh SpeedZone Raceway Friday night for a special night of racing featuring the IRA Outlaw Sprint Cars and the second leg of the 2016 King of the Ring IMCA Modified series. The IMCA Sport Mods and Stock Cars were also part of the big program.
The Jim’s Auto Repair IMCA Stock Cars started the feature portion of the program with Chris Lowenhagen grabbing the lead with Cory Wegner, Kerry Kope, David Hoerning, Harley Simon, Aaron Stolp and John Heinz bunched behind. A back stretch mix up on lap 7 at the front of the field sent Simon into a wild barrel roll into turn three. The car spun over 6 times times with a flash fire under the back of the car. The car ended up on the wheels in turn 3. Simon was able to climb out of the wrecked machine shaken up but OK.
Lowenhagen continued to set the pace after the restart but Jerry Winkler made a charge and one lap later was in the top spot. Winkler wasted no time opening a lead over the final half of the race to collect his first ever division feature at his home track. The battle for the runner up spot and back was tight the rest of the way with Travis Van Straten able to secure the runner up spot. Heinz took third with Lowenhagen ending a solid run taking fourth place. Wegner and Stolp rounded out the top six.
The second leg of the IMCA Modified King of the Ring series took the green with 20 cars on the grid. Mike Wedelstadt started on the front row and quickly took command of the race. Following a quick lap 2 caution, Wedelstadt was chased by Paul Parker, Benji LaCrosse, Marcus Yarie, Brian Drexler and Steve Schneider.
A debris caution bunched the field again on lap 10, and the field ran the next 15 laps before a final amber on lap 15. During that span, Wedelstadt was on cruise in front leaving a tight battle for the next five spots. Parker, LaCrosse, Yarie, Drexler, Jeremy Christians and Dan Roedl ran in a bunch setting up a five lap sprint following the final restart.
Wedelstadt was able to maintain a slight lead over the final 5 laps to secure his first feature win of the season. Yarie took the runner up finish over LaCrosse. Parker, Jay Matthias and Christians rounded out the top six.
The Nolte’s Auto Repair and Towing IMCA Spot Mods were the final event of the evening with Tim Sheppard leading the opening lap before a caution regrouped the field. Bernie Miller claimed the top spot after the restart and was able to open a lead on the field before a second caution on lap 6. Kevin Bethke moved in the runner up spot after the restart and pressured the leader until a slight slip in turn 2 on lap 12, open a gap enough for Bethke to sneak inside and take over the lead entering turn 3. Colten Van Hierden was right behind Miller with Jeff Schmuhl, Sheppard and Brekken Kleinschmidt right behind. The activity at the front was ended when a final caution on lap 14, ended the race due to curfew. Bethke claimed his first feature win here since May 13, 2011. Miller took the runner up spot with Van Hierden, Schmuhl, Kleinschmidt and Ryan Besaw rounding out the top six positions,
In the IRA 50th Anniversary main event, Brad Loyet took over the lead on lap 9 from Scott Neitzel and despite 2 quick cautions in the race, held off a late race charge by Mike Reinke to capture the victory.
A full regular 6 division program will return to the SpeedZone this coming Friday Night, July 29 with racing at 7 PM.
