Oshkosh, May 31- On what was to be a bad weather day, it turned out to be clear and warm for Oshkosh Lanes to present a full night of action on a smooth fast track at the Oshkosh Speedzone Friday night. A filed of 101 cars checked in and ran a fast paced program with the final checker falling at 9:40.
The Total Power Sales Street Stocks took the track first for their feature. The field sorted out after a couple laps and defending champion, Rich Garb led the way. Jerry Kope and Jerry Winker worked their way through traffic and after a lap 11 caution bunched the field, the top three pulled away from the pack in a tight battle for the lead. Garb ran the outside line and Winkler hooked up inside. They swapped the lead several times with Kope right behind. With 5 laps remaining, Garb was able to regain the lead with Winkler and Kope moving high on the track as well. Garb pulled away to take the checkers followed by Winkler and Kope. Dan Knaus, Johnny Ashcraft and Jim Pollnow rounded out the top six.
John Schultz led the opening laps of the Outlaw Chassis Grand Nationals before Larry Richards worked the high line to perfection and swept into the top spot. Richards started to build a lead while the pack sorted out behind. Shultz, Ben Schneider, Terry Van Roy, Brian Henry and Tim Reichenberger ran in a pack behind until a late race caution erased Richards lead with five laps remaining.
Richards again started to pull away but, Reichenberger was the mover taking over the runner up spot with a couple laps left. He was able to close in on the leader, but ran out of laps leaving the checkers to go to Richards. Reichenberger was followed by Van Roy, Henry, Schneider and Schultz.
The Automotive Supply Company IMCA Modifieds put 24 cars on the grid with rookie contender, T.J. Smith grabbing the lead at the start. Mike Mueller, Chris Engels, Mike Wedelstadt, Brian Drexler, Justin Ritchie, Johnny Whitman and Troy Jerovetz were bunched up behind. Several different drivers moved up to challenge for the lead, but Smith, looking more like a veteran than a rookie, set a smooth pace and line to maintain the lead. Jerovetz was the mover in the mid point of the race and picked his way to the front. After a late race caution, Jerovetz was able to work into the top spot and started to open a lead. The race for second stayed tight to the finish, with Ritchie able to finish second with Wedelstadt third. Whitman, Drexler and Sean Jerovetz rounded out the top six.
Brock Saunders took charge of the Hansel Trucking IMCA Northern Sport Mod feature with Jeff Schmuhl, Kelsey Hayes, Steve Schneider and Mark Howe behind. Schmuhl was running the outside line and stayed there the entire race. Saunders held the lead on the inside line for several laps before Schmuhl moved into the top spot and started to open a slight lead. The pack exchanged positions behind while trying to move forward and keep pace with the leader. Point leader, Todd Weise, led a charge from deep in the field bringing J.J. Andersen, Jon Schultz and Brandon Schmitt along. Over the final laps, Schultz worked into the runner up spot and started to close on the leader. Schmuhl had the outside working to perfection and held on to win his first feature of the season. Schultz was second. Weise claimed third. Schneider took fourth with Andersen and Schmitt rounding out the top six.
The Ellington Mutual Insurance Dirt Devils stayed bunched at the front for the first half of the race with Ralph Leigeois, Jr finally breaking free and opened a lead. Shaun Bangart, Calvin Nowak, and Josh Roehl challenged for a couple laps before Liegeois moved ahead for good leaving the race for second. Bangart led the pack to the finish with Nowak, Roehl, Mike Motie and Kasey Gross rounding out the top six.
